Traction motors operate based on the principles of electromagnetic induction and electromagnetic force.

Simply put:

A current-carrying conductor experiences force within a magnetic field: the motor's stator (stationary component) generates a magnetic field. When the windings on the rotor (rotating component) are energised, they become current-carrying conductors. Within the magnetic field, these conductors experience a force which drives the rotor to rotate.

Rotating magnetic field (for AC motors): By precisely controlling the phase of the three-phase alternating current in the stator windings, a rotating magnetic field is generated. This rotating field 'draws' the rotor's magnetic field into rotation with it, thereby achieving the output of rotational speed and torque.
